Vietnam War resources for schools 2021

On 7 June, we commemorate 50 years since Operation Overlord. The operation included the Battle of Long Khanh, one of Australia’s last major operations in the Vietnam War.

This anniversary encourages us to reflect on the qualities of courage and perseverance that characterised the Australians’ service in Vietnam. We honour the service and sacrifice of the almost 60,000 Australian men and women who served, including more than 500 people who lost their lives.

We emailed new educational resources to Australian schools for teachers and students. These will help schools commemorate the anniversaries of the Vietnam War.

Digibooks for smartboards and tablets

A way for us to share educational resources that is both interactive and engaging. Helping students learn about Australia's wartime history.

Then and now: Jobs in the Australian defence forces

This digibook uses images and simple text to explain many people's jobs in the Vietnam War. It compares those jobs to present-day roles in the Australian Defence Force. Includes teacher notes with background information and connections to the Australian Curriculum.

Stories from the Vietnam War

SECONDARY SCHOOL RESOURCE

This digibook explores 12 personal stories. Students discover what it was like during the Vietnam War from Australians who were there. Each story has research questions for further investigation and understanding of the war.

In Their Own Words

Our In Their Own Words series aims to develop students’ understanding of military service and wartime experience through oral history interviews. This lesson focuses on the Vietnam War. Australian veterans cover many topics from the Birthday Ballot and the pressure of leadership to the role of Australian nurses and personal stories of coming home. Educational activities accompany each video.

These 2 activities explore the service and sacrifice of Australians during the Vietnam War. The resources include background context and educational questions to encourage student research.
