Four male soldiers crouching down in grass and looking over a map.

Officers of the 24th Battalion study a map of their forward area, July 1943. While the main Australian advance was towards Salamaua, the 24th was instead deployed north of Wau along tracks leading to the upper Markham Valley, where troops occupied forward observation posts and patrolled.
