In September 1945, Australians of the occupying Timor Force pay respects at the grave of Captain Norman Roff, 2/40th Battalion, who was killed in the fighting for Timor on 23 February 1942. Of English birth, he had become headmaster of Launceston Grammar School before enlisting in 1940. His battalion commander described Roff as a man of 'outstanding gallantry and leadership'.
