A painting of a battlefield with troops shooting and charging under smokey gunfire.

The taking of Lone Pine by Fred Leist, 1921, oil on canvas, 122.5 x 245.5 cm. This painting shows the attack of 6 August 1915 at 5.30 pm on the Turkish frontline trenches by men of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Battalions, NSW. The Australians wore white calico arm bands to clearly distinguish themselves from the Turks in the heat of battle. In the painting the attackers have just reached the pine log head cover on the Turkish frontline trenches. AWM ART02931
