A heavily bandaged man is escorted by a soldier along a dirt road.

An Australian stretcher bearer helps a wounded German soldier at the Battle of Messines. During operations at Messines between 7 and 11 June 1917 the Australian Army Medical Corps personnel of the 3rd Australian Division assisted some 3000 ‘walking wounded’ cases. When these men reached so-called ‘collecting posts’ well behind the front line they were given hot drinks and something to eat and then moved on as quickly as possible out of the operational area.
