Brigadier Raymond Tovell, Commanding Officer of the 26th Brigade, at his headquarters in Tobruk. Tovell served during World War I and lost his elder brother on Gallipoli. He survived Pozières and ended the war as a brigade major, receiving the DSO for his work during a series of battles in 1918. An accountant by training, between the wars Tovell was involved in local politics, the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia and the militia. He took command of the 26th Brigade early in World War II and was awarded a Bar to his DSO for his role in the fighting around Tobruk. (AWM P02242.007)
