While I was living in London with my Aunt I saw the advertisement for the Royal Australian Navy so I thought ‘I’ll apply for that’ which I did and got inducted into the Royal Australian Navy, completed some training with the RN and eventually left this country to join Australia and the Sydney in Sydney. That was on the 3rd of September 1949.
Well, being in the Royal Navy during the war we were under attack, you might say, from Kamikazes and the like. When I joined the Australian navy, it was peacetime so a little bit quieter a lot easier going.
