One of the 'old soldiers' in the 8th Division was Private Raymond Coker. Born in 1900, he had put his age up to enlist in the 1st AIF in 1917 and served in the 2nd Light Railway Operating Company. He enlisted in the 2nd AIF in July 1940 and was posted to Malaya with the 2/4th Reserve Motor Transport Company. He died as a prisoner of war on 7 May 1945 at Sandakan, Borneo.
