Portrait painting of Captain John Vernon. In the background are water ways, bushes with the sun shining through the clouds

Murray Griffin, Captain John Vernon. Vernon was a lieutenant in the 2/18th Battalion when the Japanese attacked. His platoon fought against the initial landing in his sector and Vernon then worked hard to ensure his platoon was able to withdraw with its wounded. He was later promoted and was awarded the Military Cross. (AWM ART 24496)
