Portrait of three soldiers all wearing uniform.

For many men, and especially infantrymen, the campaign had delivered only suffering and death, and the survivors faced more of the same as prisoners of war. This portrait of three 2/29th Battalion men was taken shortly after they arrived in Malaya in August 1941. Private Sydney Riley (left) was presumed killed in action on 22 January 1942 at Parit Sulong. His two friends survived the battle but Private Allan Clinch (right) was later reported missing in action, presumed killed in action on 10 February 1942 in the defence of Singapore. Private Robert Towers (centre) survived the campaign and went into captivity on Singapore Island; after labouring on work parties around the island, he was sent as a labourer to Japan, where he died of illness on 8 November 1943.
