Corporal John 'Jack' Edmondson (portrait and at front of group with men of the 2/17th Battalion). On the night of 13–14 April 1941 Edmondson was part of a small patrol sent to destroy a German post that threatened Australian positions at Tobruk. He was wounded in the charge, but killed one German with his bayonet and then saved his officer's life by killing two more. Shortly afterwards Edmondson died of his wounds and was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross, the first received by an Australian in World War II.
