A group portrait of eight chief petty officers on what is believed to be HMAS Sydney (II), c. 1940. HMAS Sydney served with distinction in the Mediterranean; between June 1940 and her return to Australia in January 1941, the ship was involved in a number of significant engagements, including the bombardment of Bardia. She was lost in action off the coast of Western Australia in November 1941 in battle with the German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran, which was also sunk. None of Sydney's crew of 645 men survived. After decades of speculation on the final location of the two ships, they were found in March 2008, approximately 12 nautical miles apart, off the West Australian coast.
