Australian sappers, including one using a pneumatic drill in the background, prepare defensive positions outside Tobruk. Sappers spent much of their time improving Tobruk's defences and laying mines, but infantry at Tobruk were also often to be found wielding shovels as they too dug shelter against enemy fire.
