Two days before the raid on Carrier Hill, Private Jack Spavin, Private Ron Daniels and Sergeant Leonard Batty posed for this photo in front of their Bren Gun Carrier. During the attack Batty was wounded when his carrier took a direct hit from an Italian anti-aircraft gun. Daniels fought on until he too was wounded, while Spavin managed to keep the enemy at bay until help arrived. Batty was awarded the DCM for his 'audacious determination and bravery' during this action. Spavin was killed in action on 10 July 1942.
