Men of the Royal Engineers in Syria repair a bridge over the Litani river, June 1941. The bridge had been a key part of the Allied invasion plan for Syria and was well defended by the Vichy French forces, which held higher ground. The plan to take the bridge was foiled when the Vichy French forces blew it up. This left the men of the 2/16th Battalion no option but to cross the river, under fire, in a single canvas boat which carried only eight men at a time.
