Soldiers in a vehicle watch a bright blast in the distance

An Australian battery shells Vichy French positions during the Battle of Damour in July 1941. The French artillery fire was prompt and accurate. Lieutenant John Grant, a theological student of North Adelaide, was among the first killed by shellfire early in the battle. The battle was the final major operation of the Australian campaign in Syria and Lebanon. (AWM 008624)
