Australian troops move through the desert of Tobruk, August 1941. Wearing shorts and steel helmets, the heat was oppressive. Phillip Loffman of the 2/28th Battalion recalled that the steel helmets were particularly hot and soldiers often took them off in quiet times. He recalls one officer, who was notorious for not wearing the helmet himself, ordered a group of soldiers to put on their helmets. A reply came from one soldier, 'when you put yours on mate, I'll put mine on'.
