Men of the 2/24th Australian Field Park Company, Royal Australian Engineers, in September 1941, stand respectfully around the grave of one of their fallen—Sapper Denis Ryan. Ryan had died of wounds from a bomb blast in August, and his mates spent their spare time constructing his grave. On the night Ryan died, Chaplin Owen Thomas Cosgriff wrote in his diary: 'Denis Ryan brought in dead from bombing—then his brother arrived and [we] had to show him the corpse—not a nice spectacle'. The next day he notes that a mass was held in remembrance.
