A nurse and officer look at an injured man lying on a bed

Australian Army Sister Mary Glasgow and Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Blamey visit Signaller John Kindred, who had been evacuated from Tobruk, at the 2/2nd Australian General Hospital in El Kantara, Egypt, August 1941. Australian nurses had served in Tobruk from 27 March 1941, but were evacuated with some 300 patients on the British hospital ship HMS Vita on 6 April. The Commanding Officer, Colonel Spiers, wrote of their reaction to this evacuation: 'They left under protest, with a deep sense of injustice, and all stated they were willing to take their chance with the rest of the unit'.
