Members of the 9th Australian Division and the Polish Infantry prepare to do some digging in Tobruk, September 1941. The Polish Carpathian Brigade relieved most of the 9th Division in Tobruk in October 1941. According to the Australian official historian of the campaign, the men of the Brigade were a force strengthened by the adversity they had faced in Poland: Self-selected by initiative, sifted by adversity, culled of the weak-hearted by surmounted barriers and motivated by insatiable hatred of their nation's oppressors, the band of eager, vengeful men who constituted the Carpathian Brigade were trained to a pitch that matched their ardour to fight.
