Major General Morshead, Commanding Officer of the 9th Division, with Major General Ronald MacKenzie Scobie. Morshead handed over command of the Tobruk Fortress to Scobie on 22 October 1941. Morshead had held Tobruk with an aggressive defensive strategy. In November 1941, Morshead was awarded the Virturi Militari, the Polish equivalent of the Victoria Cross, for his leadership in Tobruk. The head of the Polish government in exile, General Wladyslaw Sikorski, made the presentation, addressing Morshead as the 'heroic commander of the fortress of Tobruk'.
