Soldiers on a ship watch another ship in the distance

Troops of the 9th Australian Division on board a destroyer, having been evacuated from Tobruk, October 1941. ABC war correspondent Chester Wilmot described the scene on one of the ships as it left the harbour: Until this moment, the Diggers had been quiet, but as they broke contact with Tobruk first one whistle then another and another shrilled out from the destroyer and from the shore came others in reply. Then a hush, until across the water echoed their own farewell—a long coe-ee. (AWM 041859)
