On the morning of 31 October 1942 'Bluey' Vickerman of the 2/32nd battalion, found the mortally wounded Erich Hermann on the El Alamein battlefield. As he lay dying, Hermann handed Vickerman his diary, some photographs and a collection of personal papers. After the war one of Vickerman's children asked his German teacher to translate the young German soldier's diary and papers. Having read the diary, the teacher, with Vickerman's permission, made contact with Hermann's widow, travelled to Germany and returned her husband’s photographs and papers.
