German shells burst over 9th Division positions at El Alamein on 1 November 1942. That day members of the 2/32nd, 2/28th and 2/43rd Battalions faced what one historian described as their greatest ordeal of the war. Holding out against fierce German attacks, the Australians fought until 2.30 the following morning, when the enemy finally withdrew. In the space of four days in late October and early November 1942, the 24th Brigade, of which these battalions were part, and the 2/3rd Pioneer Battalion, suffered more than 500 deaths in action.
