With pistol drawn, an officer leads his men into battle at El Alamein, or so it would appear. In fact this photograph was staged after the battle and the Australian War Memorial caption notes that instead of charging the enemy, these Australians are moving towards their own cookhouse. British official photographer Len Chetwyn's original caption described the shot as depicting an event of 3 November 1942, when troops of the 9th Australian Division stormed a German strongpoint at El Alamein through a dense smoke screen.
