A shirtless male soldier swing a large hammer with more shirtless male soldiers working in the background.

Australian engineers work on a bridge on 3 February 1945. The sapper wielding a sledge hammer in the foreground is Sapper Fred Beeton of the 2/14th Field Company. This unit had disembarked at Aitape in November, the first of four Australian field companies to arrive there, and had been busily erecting bridges ever since. Australians had built more than forty bridges by February. The photographed bridge was prefabricated in Aitape and the pieces transported to the river by truck. AWM 018072
