Male soldiers gathered around a piece of machinery made with wood.

These Australians and about 200 New Guineans built Hayfield airstrip in April 1945. An improvised roller made from bush timber and dragged there by New Guineans represented the most sophisticated equipment available. The men are probably members of the pioneer platoon of the 2/7th Battalion. AWM 112652
