On 20 April 1945, Private Harry Bartholomew of the 2/1st Battalion sits outside a Japanese hut captured by his company in recent fighting. Four days earlier, he had been part of a section that had advanced into the fire lane of a heavy machine-gun, which had quickly killed one Australian and wounded another. Bartholomew then stepped into the open, firing his Bren gun from the hip and charging the enemy gun. After he killed the gunner, the remainder of the Japanese crew fled. Seizing the Japanese weapon, Bartholomew swung it round on its tripod and fired on the fleeing enemy. He killed one and wounded another. Bartholomew was awarded the Military Medal. AWM 091176
