A view of a beach with male soldiers disembarking from boats and making their way to shore.

Aerial view of 'Farida Force' landing at Dove Bay on 11 May 1945. There were 623 men in the force, including most of the 2/6th Cavalry (Commando) Regiment and elements of the 2/3rd Machine Gun Battalion and other units. The Australian 43rd Landing Craft Company brought them ashore. The landing encountered only 'a few monosyllabic rifle shots, raggedly spaced', wrote the commando regiment's historian, for the 'barrage seemed to have battered the beach into insensibility'. The Australians met 2/8th Battalion troops advancing from west of Wewak on 22 May. AWM OG2945
