An Australian male soldier in a bunker is showing indigenous Papua New Guineans an object.

Sergeant Rowland Ayres of the 2/8th Battalion discovers a Japanese pistol while searching captured enemy positions on Hill One, near Mount Shiburangu, on 11 June 1945. The Australians lost 9 killed and 2 wounded that day and killed 33 Japanese. Ayres, who proved himself an intrepid patroller, shows the pistol to a member of the Royal Papuan Constabulary. This unit provided crucial support to the Australians in the Aitape–Wewak campaign. AWM 093051
