The wreckage of a Halifax bomber of RAF Bomber Command lies in a field in Germany in January 1944. Bomber crews faced two great enemies during an 'op' – flak (anti-aircraft fire) and German night fighters. Pilot Officer Donald Shipley RAAF, 10 Squadron RAF, was shot down over Germany on the night of 28-29 January 1944. Five of us got out; only God knows what happened to our brave skipper, Bill Kilsby and our newly and happily married wireless operator, Syd Duggett, whose charred bodies were found huddled together in the wireless operator's section of our burnt-out Halifax.
