Almost 1500 Australian airmen became prisoners of war in Europe, most after having bailed out of stricken aircraft over enemy occupied territory. Afflicted by boredom and with no idea as to how long they might remain in captivity, prisoners took up all manner of activities to pass the time. This group of Australians, held in Stalag Luft I at Barth, in Germany, formed a cricket team and had among its supporters a New Zealander, who is standing at the right of the back row.
