Dudley Goodwin was a stockman by profession. He joined the Australian Army and was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3 RAR). He served in the Korean for 680 days, between 28 September 1950, when the Australians arrived at Pusan, and 7 August 1952.
On 5 November 1950, David had to participate in a bayonet charge against an enemy position defended by machine guns at Chongchon River. His platoon commander, Lieutenant Eric Larsson, was shot and killed in the attack, after which the United Nations forces started to retreat southward.
Dudley recalled the miserably cold winters of the Korean War. Their poor quality uniforms were mostly stock left over from the two World Wars, although the quality of clothing improved once American issue was provided.
