Australian troops raised the Australian flag over the village of Kokoda on 3 November 1942. It was an important symbol of victory on the Kokoda Track.
The anniversary of that victory is commemorated in Australia as Kokoda Day. In Papua New Guinea, they celebrate ‘Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels Day’ to honor the local civilians. These people carried supplies, helped the sick and wounded, and built wartime infrastructure.
Along the Kokoda Track, over 600 Australian soldiers died, and around 1,600 were wounded. It's remembered as the place of some of the most gruelling fighting experienced by Australians in World War II.
To help remember those who served, we developed the Papua New Guinea Remembrance Trails website. Australians can easily learn about and connect with the experiences and sacrifices of war in New Guinea and Papua.
