James Peter 'Jim' Richmond was born on 24 February 1945 in Jandowae, Queensland.
In 1966, Jim was called up for National Service. He served with 11 Platoon, D 'Delta' Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR).
Jim was wounded during the Battle of Long Tan in August 1966. He was one of 105 Australians and 3 New Zealanders who fought against over 2,000 enemy forces in a rubber plantation near Long Tan.
Jim remembered the battle as a harrowing experience. He recalled how the enemy surrounded them and it was nearly impossible to hear each another over the noise of gunfire. Jim was shot twice in the chest during the battle. He lay all night, face down, at his section post. He recalled the relief in the morning when his platoon returned. The memory of seeing his mates again has always stayed with him.
In May 1968, D Company, 6RAR, was awarded a US Presidential Unit Citation 'for extraordinary heroism'; one of only 2 Australian units to have received the decoration.
After the war, Jim returned to Vietnam and laid a poppy at the battle site, a place that's so significant for him and other veterans.
