Robert John Connor was born on 3 December 1945 in Sydney, New South Wales. He joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Academy at Point Cook in 1963.
In 1965, he graduated from Melbourne University with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in nuclear physics. A year later, he graduated from the RAAF Academy and went on to train as a pilot.
In 1967, Robert served with No. 38 Squadron, RAAF in Papua New Guinea. His next deployment was with No. 35 Squadron, RAAF in South Vietnam.
During the Vietnam War, Robert flew transport aircraft. The pilots transported anything, from ammunition to livestock. Robert remembered the transport squadron as Wallaby Airlines.
Robert's return to Australia felt like an anti-climax. He was collected by a taxi service from the airport and quietly returned home.
Robert had over 5,500 hours of flying experience during his career and flew many different aircraft, including the Caribou, Macchi, DC3, Arava, Nomad, Winjeel and the British-built Vampire jet.
Later in life, Robert joined Canberra Legacy and followed a passion for helping other veterans and their families. Between 1998 and 2009 he served as the Chair of the Function Committee and was later elected as President. In 2016, Robert was elected to the Board of Legacy Australia Incorporated and appointed as Chair of the National Advocacy Committee.
