Steve Brain's story

Steve Brain began studying at the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1989, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in history. After graduating, he enrolled for military training at Duntroon. Eventually Robert was posted to 2/4 Battalion in Townsville and served in A Company.

When the Rwanda mission was announced, the contingent's rifle protection company was based on 2/4's A Company. Most of the 1st Australian contingent United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda II (UNAMIR II) arrived in Rwanda in late August 1994.

While serving in Rwanda, Steve's witnessed to many horrible sights that remain graphic memories. He is proud of his service and those in the rifle company, as he is of the Meritorious Unit Award that the 2 contingents serving in Rwanda received.
