The Korean War was the first major conflict of the larger Cold War. The Cold War was a political, economic and military contest between the 2 post-war superpowers, the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Soviet Union).
The Republic of Korea (South Korea) was supported by the United States (US), which persuaded the United Nations (UN) to side with them.
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) was backed by China and the Soviet Union.
Australia was one of 16 countries that contributed forces to the UN military intervention after North Korea invaded South Korea on 25 June 1950. Six other countries pledged medical units. In 2018, Germany was recognised by South Korea and the UN Command for its contribution. West Germany contributed a Red Cross hospital after the armistice in 1953.
