Soldiers at Gueudecourt experienced some of the filthiest conditions on the Western Front. The Australian Imperial Force (AIF) attack on Stormy Trench was where Australia's most decorated soldier of World War I, Henry "Harry" Murray, earned his Victoria Cross (VC). After Gallipoli, Murray transferred to the 13th Battalion and was deployed to France in June 1916. He commanded a company during the battalion’s attack on the German position of Stormy Trench. The company captured the German position and repulsed three fierce counterattacks. Murray led repeated bayonet and bombing attacks himself. He was awarded the VC for his actions during the battle.
